GOLD × WakeMed
GOLD and WakeMed work together to bring patient portal and digital health education to WakeMed Senior Wellness members. The classes meet older adults where they are: in person, hands-on, and built around the questions people actually want to ask about MyChart and managing their own health information.
Our first sessions ran at WakeMed North and WakeMed Cary as pilot classes, and the model has been growing steadily since. Each class is co-designed with WakeMed clinical staff and taught by GOLD trainers, so the content is technically accurate, plainly explained, and grounded in real patient workflows.

Free MyChart class hosted by WakeMed and co-taught with GOLD. Bring your phone or tablet; staff will help you set up your account, send your first message to a provider, and find your test results.

About the partnership
The collaboration started from a shared observation: digital health tools are only useful if people are confident using them. MyChart in particular is a powerful platform, but older adults often hesitate to log in, message a provider, or refill a prescription online because no one ever sat with them long enough to make the steps feel safe.
GOLD's curriculum, paired with WakeMed's clinical context, fills that gap. Classes are free for participants, capped at small group sizes so questions get the time they need, and structured so attendees leave with a usable account and a written reference for what they learned.
Pilot results have been consistent: participants who attend a single session report feeling notably more comfortable accessing their records, communicating with their care team, and managing their day-to-day health online.
Looking ahead, the program is expanding from MyChart fundamentals into adjacent topics like understanding test results, navigating the WakeMed mobile app, and recognizing telehealth-related scams targeting older adults. WakeMed registration handles event sign-ups so the existing patient-facing systems stay in sync.
